I really should learn some Korean
Today I learned the struggle of a language barrier, not knowing my address, and curvy roads. To start, I caught a taxi and went to Ulsan beach which has a walk way along it and a hike through a pine forest all along the coast. So I went there and drank a juice at 'Holly's Coffee' then hiked the trail. Which was beautiful. All pine trees and along the coast. You could see a view all along the city and out to the ocean. It was cool outside, smelled fresh and I was in nature. And I got to practice being Korean and take self portraits which everyone does every where. Normally it actually two people who want to both be in the picture. And they take them everywhere! Like Costco where I saw a couple take a picture (you know camera held out at arms length and just hope you get both in the picture). That one confused me. Who wants to show off being together at Costco. "Oh look this is me and my boyfriend shopping for mass amounts of food." That'll be hung on the wall. But! Hiking alone an knowing that picture with people in them are the pictures that I keep mp and like most I am working on the self portrait.
Then I walked back to the main road and caught a taxi. Of course I have no idea what taxi edict is and I speak zero Korean. So I got totally confused when I got in the parked taxi and he said something and laughed at me. Ya that started the confusion. Then I gave him the card that has my address on it and he said "oh ocean city ya." So I sat back and chilled out trying to figure out what the stores around us where selling. Then he stops outside a building and say "ocean city." Shit... It's a building I have never seen in my life. Now at this moment I don't have a cell phone, I defiantly don't know any street names and these roads are so of the most confusing roads I've seen. "No." I said to the driver. The look on his face was sort of priceless. Then there was some loud talking in Korean where he looked at me and gestured to the building and then said some more Korean. Did I mention that I don't speak any Korean? So the he started calling people and yelling at them in Korean. Apparently no one knows where I live! He started driving around and kept pulling over to call more people. Then the Sea Side restaurant (right down the street from the apartment) saved the day! I saw it and started kind of yelling at the driver to turn and with a lot of gesturing and repeating on my part he got it and turned. Then with even more gesturing and trying to get him to just stop we got the the apartment. Only double the cab fare than what it cost to get out in the first place but hey I'm back! With just a little lost trust in cab drivers and really confused my he didn't use the GPS that was on his dash but home.
That was all today. Yesterday we had a party/get together at Michael's where I got to meet some of the people he works with and they got to see his house. So that went down smashingly well. It is really good to meet some more people and finally start to get a little bit of a network. Hopefully Michael will bring the phone I get to use while I'm over here home with him today then when he leaves Monday I will have access to people and not be totally alone for two weeks. Which would be dandy but I do like myself and find that I am great company so I could just find more adventures to go on and it would all be good! Now I am going to put off washing the dishes even longer by taking a bath and finishing my book. Man I have a delicious life.

Thank you for a sunshine start to my day -- laughter is so good. Just imagining you and that taxi driver brought so many images and sounds to my mind. I got a little worried -- Heavens, how will she get home? No phone? How will she be found?" -- but I knew you were OK because Michael would have moved Hell and High Water (think that is the saying) and come after you with paratroopers and the cavalry!
ReplyDeleteYour story reminded me of Tori's experience in an Eastern European country (can't remember which) riding a bus back to Hungary (I think), phone dead, couldn't read any of the signs, and didn't know where to get off the bus.. at night. That one I didn't make me laugh and I didn't hear about it till much later-- thank goodness.
The party sounded great and I would love to see some pix. Also glad that you are meeting people and will have a network to connect with while Michael is away. Also great that you enjoy your own company (as well you should :))..
I am so proud of you for venturing out, for doing the hike, and for beginning to explore. Please get one of those little foldup language brochure things that has basic travel and other essential words so you can point to what you need. Also, maybe get a temporary tatoo of your address? tee hee.
Hugs and love,
Cara
Great Story Keeley,
ReplyDeleteThese stories are the kind that will stick with you... like the time you were 6 and we were in Puerto Vallarta. Riding the bus to town and you were so worried that there were no seatbelts. By the end of the trip you and Brennan wanted to stand (even when the bus had room) because the ride was much more thrilling.
Dad
Hey Buggy,
ReplyDeleteKnowing that you were writing this and thus the story must have a happy ending helped me relax and laugh while reading this. You are such a great story teller my ladybug. You have a knack for spinning a yarn that is oh so funny!!
Today is election day. I hope I wake up tomorrow with "our guy" (as Rowan said of the last two elections) in the office. It makes me nervous, and I've been on pins and needles for weeks, about the election, my sis, and my boss Steve's dog Ozzy who contracted Valley Fever and is not doing well. Sheesh!!!
On a brighter note, I went to my IT peep friend Aleen's bday/Halloween party Saturday before last. I haven't laughed that hard in a very long time. They are all into games (of the board and electronic varieties, both) so they were well underway with some very complicated board game when I arrived. They took a break after a while to eat, and we played a version of Apples to Apples while we stood around and ate. The title was something about "horrible people" and let me tell you, it was so depraved and awful and freaking hilarious. Being on the downward slide into 50, I didn't get a bunch of the references, so had to ask the guy standing next to me, who is the newest member of the IT department. His name is Seth but I have called him "New Guy" for months. Anyhoo, needless to say, I had checked my filters at the door and found myself quietly giggling the next day whenever I remembered some of what had come out of my mouth. They all found me highly entertaining. Some of what came out of my mouth I felt embarrassed about the next day but you know, I had let my hair down and was with a group of people who really love me and are safe. The story I shared about a micropenis was fodder for jokes all night, and the catch word of the evening.
In weird news, I have another bug story to relate but have to run now. Will check in on you again this evening when I get home. Tomorrow I fly (at 7 am!!! what WAS I thinking???) to Baltimore!! Wish you were going to be there, too. SIGH.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE you,
Auntie Shelly
